Kaylin Swart confident ahead of WAFCON title defence

South African goalkeeper Kaylin Swart expressed confidence in her Banyana Banyana teammates ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The 30-year-old is set to appear in her third WAFCON campaign, having finished as a runner-up in 2018 before conquering the continent in 2022.

When asked who is most dangerous at the tournament, Swart named her teammates with no hesitation.

“I think all of us at Banyana Banyana. I mean, we are a powerhouse in our own right, so I’ll back my teammates any day,” said Swart.

Looking ahead to Banyana Banyana’s group fixtures, Swart believes that Ghana pose the biggest threat to the defending champions in the competition’s first phase.

“In our group I think Ghana will give us a tough time. Just because they transitioned and they’ve had a couple good results and I think they’re gonna surprise everyone this year.”

However, Swart stated that the team’s focus was on their own play and ability, not on that of other teams.

“I think we’re just gonna focus on ourselves right now and hopefully we all just show up and do our best,” she said.

Banyana Banyana face a tough task in Morocco, which Swart states will bring out the best of the South African side.

“The pressure is unmatched, but I think when our backs are against the wall, that’s when we play at our best. So no matter how many fans there will be, we’re going to show up and we’re going to do what we do best,” she said.

“Pressure is a privilege, but I think just dealing with pressure is just owning your own ability and knowing what you have and just being confident in whatever you do.”
